Berhampur,4/25 (zillakhabar) : The Postgraduate Department of Sociology successfully organized a distinguished lecture series on April 4, 2025, on the theme “A Room of One’s Own: Elimination of Discrimination is Ensuring Human Rights of Women.” The event aimed to foster awareness and critical discussion around the multifaceted issues concerning women’s rights and gender equality in contemporary society.
The keynote speaker for the session was Mrs. Snighdharani Panigrahi, former member of the Women’s Commission and a noted human rights activist. The session commenced with a warm welcome by Ms. Rasmirekha Jena, followed by an introduction of the guest by Dr. Diptimayee Mishra.
In her enlightening address, Mrs. Panigrahi delved into various pressing societal issues related to gender discrimination. She shed light on both traditional and contemporary concerns such as domestic violence, live-in relationships, evolving family structures, and the implications of the POCSO Act. She emphasized the significance of legal frameworks that aim to empower women and uphold their rights.


One of the most noteworthy aspects of her talk was the emphasis on men’s sensitization towards women’s space and privacy. She highlighted how, often, the importance of respecting women’s autonomy and personal boundaries is overlooked, and advocated for a more inclusive and empathetic societal approach.
The session concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Bagmi Priyadarshini, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the guest speaker and all participants for making the event a grand success
